From our principal

We have some very exciting news from the visual arts area of the school with Jasmine McDermont and Cam Naughton both receiving scholarship for painting. New Zealand Scholarship is an award that recognises top secondary school students. Top students in each subject are given the opportunity to do NZ Scholarship assessments in order to achieve this award. The number of scholarships available in a subject is limited to around 3% so this is an absolutely outstanding achievement for these young artists.

This week marked the start of my weekly meetings with our head students. We meet for an hour every Wednesday morning at 8am. This year we again have a great bunch of student leaders: Hannah, Ashley, Ezra, Mackenzie and Stan who certainly have huge enthusiasm and plans for the year.

Their overriding vision is on how to build on and sustain a positive school culture within Rolleston College, and Rolleston College’s perception in the wider community celebrating what we do well and addressing any challenges. They outlined their plans to approach this this year.

As a part of our meeting we had a long discussion about school uniforms and what a uniform symbolises in terms of school pride. They spoke of their pride in Rolleston College and that wearing their uniform with pride is one way to do that. They also talked about their desire for some potential changes or additions to the uniform that will be discussed and consulted on within the wider community in the coming months.

It's so inspiring to see young people take the lead in bettering our community.
