Principal's pānui

Kia ora koutou,

Hope you have all enjoyed a fabulous Friday.

On a governance front, at our last Board of Trustees meeting, Lou Milne stepped down as the presiding member/board chair of our Board of Trustees. Lou has been a fantastic board chair in the time she has been in the role giving many hours to serving the school both at Board of Trustees meetings and as a member of the property committee.

Lou has been a great support to me as the principal. Luckily, she is still remaining on the Board of Trustees, and just stepping down as chair.

Leanne Chapman has been voted in as the new presiding member. She brings a wealth of experience to the role with a business background. Leanne has been a member of the Board of Trustees for some time and we are lucky to have her expertise both on the board and now as the presiding member.

You will notice further on in the Lancewood we are seeking expressions of interest to co-opt some further members to the board with particular skillsets that will assist with some of the key functions of the board moving forward.

There will also be a board election later in the year, when we encourage any parents wanting to make a difference in our wider school community to put themselves up for election. It is a very rewarding opportunity!

This week we had our lockdown practice. The learners did a fantastic job overall and we were impressed by the maturity of most. There are a few things that we need to work on for next time—which is why we do a practice—to uncover these things, and rectify them in the unlikely event of a real lockdown situation.

Unfortunately that was followed by the events of Thursday, which I know were very distressing for our school community. Our latest communication from Network for Learning (N4L) has given some further advice for learners related to avoiding online environments that might compromise email accounts. We wish to remind learners not to install suspicious software on computers they use for schoolwork. Common things that N4L see are gaming cracks/cheats and streaming video downloaders that include password stealers. We will continue to work with N4L and our IT providers to clearly understand the more technical aspects of what has occurred, and if there are any other strategies available to prevent this type of event from recurring.

We have seen a huge influx in learners joining our vocal group—up to over 25 learners—which is larger than we have had in previous years. They are sounding great and we can’t wait to hear their first public performances.

Have a great weekend

Rachel
