We've been having our initial one-on-one conversations with our learners and getting to know what their intentions are when they leave our kura and what they're interested in.
Learners have been busy completing their learner profiles that showcase the range of activities they are involved in both inside and outside of school. This includes cultural, sporting, academic and service commitments.
They've also been reflecting on where they believe they currently are on our new self-reflection rubrics. Each learner is asked to look over the areas of R2L, R2A and R2F and highlight where they believe they are at with each of the statement questions.
Following on from this, the learners then created R2L, R2A and R2F goals. These goals are for the term and we will be regularly checking in to see where they are at and how we can support them to achieve.
They were also given a NCEA tracker to complete. They are required to keep this up to date with all of their course standards and credits they are able to obtain. This gives a good idea of where their credits are coming from and how they are able to achieve University Entrance if they are in year 13.
On top of this, we have a services hui for all year 12 and 13 learners. This is where the sports, nurses/sexual health, counsellors, leadership team, BOT student rep, principal's nominee, careers, youth workers, art/cultural and student services departments are all invited to come and present to our learners. This gives them an idea of who they can go to or seek out if they need support.
Engagement questions to ask your learner:
Advisory notices
Uniform: We are completing uniform checks at the moment and if your learner is not wearing the incorrect uniform, a letter will be sent home. Learners are expected to be wearing the correct uniform with pride. If there is an issue, please contact their advisory coach to discuss this further.
Shoes must be completely black. No Birkenstocks, no Crocs.
Diaries: Every learner has been issued a diary and is expected to have this with them for their classes. We have been using them in Advisory to start our lessons with a Check and Connect. These diaries are a very useful tool, especially with the 6-day timetable. Learners can record ahead of time what they have on each day so that they have easy access to check their classes. There are also lots of handy tips and tricks around hauora for each week, along with formula sheets for mathematics, the periodic tableof elements, how to write a bibliography, first aid and much more.
Right place, right time: Year 12 and 13 are important academic years and we are encouraging our learners to ensure they are in the right place at the right time, and doing the correct thing. They are the role models to our younger cohorts and we have high expectations of them.
Leaving school grounds: If a learner needs to leave school grounds for any reason during school hours, then they must sign out and have permission from home.
SchoolBridge: Learners can check their timetables in the morning and throughout the day on SchoolBridge to see what classes they have. They've been encouraged to have this bookmarked on their laptops so they can easily access it.
Driving forms: These are to be handed back in if your learner is driving to school. Please ask them if they have completed one and if they need to pick up a form, they can ask their advisory coach or collect from student services.
