The Rolleston Spirit

The qualities that make up the Rolleston Spirit identify the key values and dispositions that we believe are important for our learners to develop during their time at Rolleston College. They focus on developing the learner's awareness of self, community and future.

These qualities are based on international research highlighting the key skills that are most valued in the workplace and the attitudes required to flourish as an individual in the modern world.

By providing a learning environment that both nurtures and challenges, supports and extends, it is our aim that all learners will develop their self-awareness and social responsibility, fostering and reflection on these qualities.

These qualities closely aligned with the vision, principles, and values outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum (2007) speak of developing confidence, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners.

In developing the Rolleston Spirit, we aim to equip learners to

E Tū Tāngata at Rolleston College

E Tū Tāngata is an initiative based in Aotearoa New Zealand that seeks to tackle a cultural phenomenon known as Tall Poppy Syndrome, where people who stand out or achieve success are often “cut down” through criticism or envy. This social dynamic discourages individuals from celebrating their achievements and can lead to self-doubt, isolation, and a fear of failure.

E Tū Tāngata aims to shift this mindset by promoting a culture where everyone is valued and success is celebrated collectively.

Our kura and learners are shaped by the E Tū Tāngata mindset: every learner has value, others matter, and we succeed together.

We are proud to be an E Tū Tāngata school.

Ready to Learn

Ready to Learn (R2L) is about establishing a flourishing learning environment for everyone. Rolleston College does this by teaching desirable behaviours, improving behaviour support systems for learners and increasing positive interactions with learners. We use data for decision making and work on decreasing reactive management. School-wide expectations have been developed through consultation with staff and learners and a matrix of the expected behaviours in different environments (learning spaces, library, gymnasium, on field trips, etc) is displayed on posters around the school. We spend time teaching expected behaviours, and R2L expectations are outlined at the start of each lesson.

We are a restorative practice school. Learn about restorative practice here.

Ready to Achieve

Ready to Achieve (R2A) all about ensuring that learners have what they need to succeed within their chosen pathway. Learners are guided by a variety of different staff to ensure that they are able to access learning that is relevant to them, and supportive of their goals. Ako coaches are trained to provide advice and support that assist learners in their pathways. Teachers are experts in their within their fields, providing learning opportunities that ensure are able to access materials relevant and to their ability. Our careers team is there to assist learners in finding pathways that are relevant and catered towards their interests. The team can also assist with setting up tasters and experiences to ensure learners have tried it all!

Ready to Flourish

Wellbeing is something sought by just about everyone, because it includes so many positive things—feeling happy, healthy, socially connected, and purposeful. Wellbeing is linked to happiness and builds resilience to get through the tough times and enables us to flourish. Ready to Flourish (R2F) is an essential part of our college curriculum and culture that is woven into our learning vehicles. We want everyone to feel good and function well. It is part of our mission at Rolleston College to ensure that every learner is able to stand and succeed as the individual they are, and have the tools to flourish.
