South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships – 5-7 April

A team of Rolleston College athletes represented us with pride at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships in Timaru from 5 to 7 April 2024.

Eden Innes won her U16 100m prelim (12.94s) into a tough -2.2m/s headwind, and Sophie Warren placed fifth in the same heat (13.82s), both qualifying for the final on Sunday morning.

Zoe Hooper placed second in her U14 prelim (13.39s), and Sophie Mercer was fifth in her U19 prelim (13.30s into an even stronger -3.5m/s headwind). They both qualified for finals too.

Zoe and Sophie were fourth and seventh in their respective 200m prelims (27.77s and 27.12s) and both made finals.

In the U15 boys' 200m prelims, Eli Craig placed seventh (25.23s, setting a new Rolleston College record in the process) and qualified for the final.

Judah Lodoviko ran a PB of 57.01s to place fourth in his U14 400m prelim and qualify for the final.

Luke Angland enjoyed an outstanding weekend, winning both the U14 boys' 1500m (with a new PB and Rolleston College record of 4:29.45) and 3000m in a new PB of 9:49.43.

Millie Long won the senior girls' para 100m (20.23s), 200m (43.09s), discus (10.62m) and shot put (5.43m, extending her own Rolleston College record).

Our girls were dominant in their 100m finals, with Zoe Hooper winning the U14 race (13.19s), Eden Innes winning the U16 (12.78s) with Sophie Warren placing fifth (13.72s), and Sophie Mercer taking fifth in the U19 final (13.15s).

They teamed up to conquer the U19 girls' 4x100m relay, winning in 50.96s over St Margaret's College (51.10s) and Mount Aspiring College (51.50s). This result is especially impressive given that Zoe is in year nine, competing against girls several years older.
