What is Tūturu?

Tūturu is a modern, evidence-based approach to student wellbeing, unique to Aotearoa.

Evidence shows that when health services work closely with schools and focus on developing teacher capacity and students’ critical thinking and decision-making, this assists them making healthy choices.

Tūturu is led by the New Zealand Drug Foundation, overseen by the Ministry of Education, Te Whatu Ora (Health NZ), NZ Police, and Te Hiringa Hauora.

What Tūturu has to offer

Tūturu is one of a number of Ministry of Education initiatives that adopts a whole school approach. Under a whole school approach, all members of a school community (such as staff, students, parents, and health providers) play active roles in student wellbeing, ensuring students stay healthy and well and remain at school.

Tūturu works with secondary schools in the following areas:

  1. Transforming school climate: This involves initiatives like Board of Trustees (BOT) training and policy enhancements to foster a supportive environment.
  2. Facilitating pastoral care: We provide resources and strategies to strengthen the pastoral care systems within schools.
  3. Providing professional learning and development opportunities for school staff: We offer training sessions and workshops to empower educators with the tools and knowledge needed to support student wellbeing effectively.
  4. Developing and producing curriculum resources for high school students in years 9–13: Our resources are crafted by curriculum experts, designed to align with NCEA, and are ready to be integrated into the classroom.

How schools can get involved with Tūturu

Tūturu works with health providers in five areas: Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.

In each region, Tūturu leads work closely with schools, providing training, support, and hosting informational events. Schools can also use individual Tūturu resources independently and receive support when needed.

Tūturu resources are used by of schools around the country and have been widely praised for their engaging and relevant content.
