Last week we took two groups to St Andrew's College for a gifted learners' conference. On Tuesday the senior learners were treated to a day that began with an introduction to philosophy and understanding what knowledge is. We looked at the father of modern mathematics and science: Descartes. The day progressed with a number of other topics facilitated by Julie Arlis, a lecturer from Oxford University. We finished with a debate on the topic "Is AI of net benefit to society?"
A number of our learners got involved in this debate and shared valuable ideas on both sides of the argument.
Junior learners were hosted on Wednesday with their first presentation from Julie Arlis on epigenetics and transhumanism. Learners were then involved in group discussions of an ethical debate, challenged to think outside of the usual parameters. We then listened to Aristotle's approach to science and human nature. We all left challenging our own virtues of character and intelligence and reflecting on the question: what influence do I want to have on the world?
All learners and teachers thoroughly enjoyed their day with many robust conversations on the way home. Thanks to the parents who helped with transport and all who allowed us to make this day possible.
