Polly: Text-to-speech assistant technology

Learners sitting literacy (writing) and numeracy digital assessments next week have access to Polly (text-to-speech assistive tool) in your assessment. All learners entered in these assessments can use Polly.

Polly is built into the NZQA online digital assessment platform.

  • Polly will support you if you need help with reading by giving you the option to listen to any text in the assessment being read aloud. You can use your own headphones when using Polly.

  • Text-to-speech supports learners by converting text into audio, so they can listen to text in the assessment being read aloud.

  • Learners using text-to-speech technology in the assessments can be accommodated in the same room as other students, but they must use headphones.

Your Ako leaders have shared how to use Polly with you.

Please watch the video guide on how to use it and read the student instructions.

You can practise using text-to-speech technology by completing past digital assessments. Look for 2023’s literacy writing and numeracy assessments on the past digital assessments page.
