"During the term one holidays I was fortunate enough to be chosen to embark on an amazing three-day, all-expenses-paid trip to Auckland alongside 35 other Māori/Pasifika rangatahi from around New Zealand," says Lincoln.
"I was one of two representatives from the Canterbury region. The programme, run by YES (Young Enterprise Scheme), allows students to delve deep into the business world by working alongside alumni of the programme, as well as successful business owners to create a business that solves a common problem."
"Our task was to create a solution, whether it be a product or service, that keeps litter off our streets and waters. Taiao Hangarua (our business) created an interactive way to work together with schools to educate students on the vital importance of kaitiakitanga and sustainability, therefore allowing them to be guardians of their own space and environment. From this we decided to be both a service and a product, and as a result we make recycled playground materials and mats. This allowed us to have a strong community focus by working with schools, for schools," Lincoln explains.
"This empowering and educational journey has allowed me to form amazing connections—especially through my team of six, who successfully won the competition!"
"Judges were impressed by our pitch execution and the fact that we had a strong purpose behind our product. As a result our three-day business team was fortunate to secure spots in the Entrepreneurs in Action (EIA) programme held in Wellington during the term two holidays alongside some other amazing prizes."
Lincoln says the skills he's learnt will "for sure allow me to thrive in my business for my Young Enterprise year 13 Business class."
He wishes to extend a special thank you to Mr Lambert for connecting him with this amazing opportunity!
