SOLO Taxonomy

Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes

SOLO Taxonomy:

At Rolleston College, SOLO Taxonomy is used as our tool for Assessment for Learning. This is how we measure the level of a learner’s understanding, thinking and/or skills, and is how we help them identify their next steps in learning. SOLO stands for “Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes”. SOLO taxonomy is not new, but has been used in New Zealand classrooms since its development in 1982. This is a well established and researched-based tool for creating deeper learning.

There are five levels for learning, each represented by the above symbols:

Pre structural – There is no evidence of understanding (below the expected curriculum level)

Unistructural – Minimal evidence of understanding (below the expected curriculum level)

Multistructual – Sufficient evidence of understanding (at the expected curriculum level)

Relational – Proficient evidence of understanding (at the expected curriculum level)

Extended Abstract – Advanced evidence of understanding (above the expected curriculum level)

Tracking Profile:

Tracking student learning at Rolleston College uses SOLO Taxonomy, so this is an essential concept for parents and caregivers to understand. Grades are derived through authentic project-based assessments rather than rote learning and examinations. As always, the best way to get a deeper understanding of progress is to have a conversation with your child and their teacher. If required, your Ako coach will be happy to assist with interpretation of tracking profiles and SOLO assessments. SOLO tracking information is also available on KAMAR Portal.
