Junior school council: meet your committee leads!

Jessica Black: Arts committee lead

I am the junior arts lead for Rolleston College. In this role I work with a small group of other students to find new ways of adding the Arts to Rolleston College. In this role I will support and help the arts thrive at Rolleston College.

My interests are mainly forms of art like dance, drawing, and playing music on my trumpet.  As well as those things I enjoy swimming, hanging out with friends and being a leader.

As junior arts lead my vision is that Rolleston College has the best possibilities with art. At Rolleston College we have plenty of art opportunities but we are also lacking some, that's why me and my group are working towards creating new art opportunities for the school.

You may have recently heard about the new campus being cut off from art spaces and other important spaces. I hope that whilst everyone's at the current campus there are the best art possibilities possible.

Nyah-Bella Dinnington: Events committee lead

This year my role on the junior council is to lead the events committee. I look forward to collaborating with the committee and supporting them to run events in our school and community.

I am passionate about music, sport and culture and love being involved in these areas of our school. Making sure I spend time with my whānau and friends is important to me.

My vision for 2024 is to work hard and strive to grow as a leader of the junior council. I will drive the Events committee by supporting them to hold successful events for our school and community. I will represent our ākonga by being an enthusiastic, reliable and responsible member of the junior council.

Lune Erasmus: Diversity committee lead

My role as the junior leader of the diversity committee is to recruit and spark creativity and encourage the members of my committee to actively seek new ways to improve the diversity of Rolleston College so that everyone can feel included and acknowledged through the aspects of diversity in our school environment. My role is to lead and take action while also encouraging others to do the same so that we, as a committee can foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion throughout Rolleston College.

I have a wide variety of interests. I find that the reason for this is because I actively enjoy improving myself and keep my mind sharp and entertained. Currently I love reading, theatre and immersing myself in nature through long walks and traveling. An important interest of mine is also volunteering in our community wherever I possibly can.

My vision is to evoke a culture of diversity within Horoeka Haemata, to create a safe space for people of all cultures and identities to thrive and creatively bloom into their full potential. At Rolleston College, anywhere you look you can see many aspects of diversity, people of different cultures and a multitude of various different identities so I think it is only appropriate that we acknowledge these aspects of diversity through creating a more diversity aware environment in Rolleston College.

Myra Khan: ICT committee lead

My interests include art, baking, sewing, volunteering, travelling and exercise.

I want to be able to have a strong, significant role while volunteering as a junior ICT leader or at least be able to do something dynamic for the school while volunteering for the junior student council.  I desire to do something for the school that would benefit the school to give it an impactful outcome, the activity does not have to be grand but it can just be intricate things that can positively influence  the school in any way. I want to be able to do something in the junior council that would make everyone's work into the student council worthwhile.

As we are only in the junior student council I do not expect to do something grand for the school but I hope to be able to do something compelling that is worth my time while volunteering for the student council in some way. I believe that every student attending Rolleston College matters so the school should be an ideal place for the students to learn, grow and flourish.

Kaitlynn Kyle: Service committee lead

As a junior council leader in service, I encourage our learners to take service opportunities, within the school or through external organisations. I also work closely with the SVA and R2F committee, helping out with various events such as open night, Character Day and Pink Shirt Day. My role works closely with teachers such as Mr Lambert and Ms McIntyre, helping support the learners at Rolleston College to take advantage of the opportunities and skills that the value of service can bring around.

I'm quite engaged in various clubs and groups both within and outside of school. Within the school, I participate in activities like the 2024 production, junior council, and surf club. However, my involvement extends beyond the school gates. As a St John cadet, I've accumulated numerous achievements, including over 100 hours of community service, participation in district competitions, and the opportunity to compete at regionals. Additionally, I've completed leadership developmental training (LDT). Beyond St John, I dedicate my time to volunteering at the Hornby Family Store for the Salvation Army, where I've been actively involved for the past four months.

My vision as the junior council service lead is to have our learners engage in more service around the school and community. Working alongside the SVA student representative helps me engage our students around the school. I hope that we can get more students into volunteering, meaning we can see more students rocking their awesome SVA badges, at silver and gold!!

Emily Spencer: Cultural committee lead

Hi! I’m Emily, and I’m the junior leader of the cultural committee. It's my job to help people of all cultures feel safe and welcomed, and to lead the cultural committee in a ton of different events to put people's culture out there.

I like to read and write in my spare time. Nothing beats a cup of hot chocolate and a good book!

I'd love to make a positive difference in my school environment and help spur growth at Rolleston College.

Charlee Thomas: Sport committee lead

I am the junior council sport lead. I am involved with Active As and try to help out with different sport events/groups around the school.

I am interested in many sports but the main one that I play is netball. I play for Rolleston College and also Prebbleton. I coach a year 4 team and also umpire. I’ve played many sports over the years and playing in a good team is something that makes me happy.

Something that we would like to improve is the enjoyment in sports and get more people involved with it. It doesn’t matter what sport but just doing something that will be enjoyable.
