Alumni journeys: Anika Gates-Thorn

Anika Gates-Thorn has recently been named in the Canterbury Rugby League women's squad at the tender age of 20, following a successful season of club league where her team—the Hornby Panthers—made the grand final.

She says she learnt a lot during her time at Rolleston College, "building and maintaining relationships, developing resilience, and understanding the essence of true leadership."

Her advice for learners seeking a fulfilling path past high school is to nurture positive relationships.

"It's important to remember how you want to be remembered," says Anika.

"Will you be known for your kindness, or for something less admirable?"

She also encourages rangatahi to "be your own person."

"Don't follow the crowd. Be a leader, and stay true to yourself."

Reminiscing on her school years, Anika says she wishes she took more time to enjoy the moments and stay present.

"School flew by, and being present and valuing the time I had would have meant a lot."

Anika embodies the E Tū Tāngata values of You have worth, We succeed together, and Others Matter. Being part of a team is a big aspect of her post-Rolleston College life, on and off the field. She's a youth worker with 24/7, and she's also studying full time!

"We live in a vast and unpredictable world, and you will have moments of doubt. But never forget your worth."
