Ready to Achieve: looking ahead to term four

As we dive into term four, our learners will shift their focus from internal assessment to examinations. Our derived grade exam engagement was outstanding: a fantastic testament to learners, staff and whānau for their PREPARATION and PARTICIPATION.

Staff have been discussing feedforward advice with learners in the classroom and as we end the term, whānau will also be receiving derived grade reports to help keep the momentum going towards the NCEA exams in term four (see the timetable here). These reports give whānau and learners ‘next step’ advice on how to PROGRESS their learning over the coming weeks.

For some of us, studying for final examinations can be a stressful time. Sometimes a little bit of stress can be okay, as it reflects that our exams are important and that learners want to reach their goals: do their PERSONAL BEST. However, too much stress (which most often happens when we leave studying to the last minute) can have a negative impact on preparation. Neuroscientific research tells us that stress impacts the brain’s ability to learn and retain information.

Our key messages during term three have been about:

Focusing on these will help to build resilience and reduce stress going into the NCEA examinations. Continuing with the wise words from the E Tū Tāngata team about ‘trying hard’ will put learners on the right path to achieving their goals.

PREPARATION (little and often)

‘Try hard’ by ensuring you have updated your study timetable and are sticking to it! Share your study timetable with family so they can support you to stick to it. Studying from NOW is key (yes, including a little bit in the holidays)!

PARTICIPATION (Show up. Try hard)

‘Try hard’ by turning up to tutorials and being on time to all of your classes. Practice past papers and complete tasks set by your teacher.

PROGRESS (Act on feedback)

‘Try hard’ by taking on board the feedback your teachers give you in class and in your derived grade report.

PERSONAL BEST (Surround yourself with success)

‘Try hard’ to reach your goals! These exams are taking you one step closer to your future career!
