Three Rolleston College performers have recently earned roles in The Court Theatre's production of The Spongebob Musical: Youth Edition.
Neo Carter (Ngāpuhi, year 11), who played the lead role of Danny in our school production of Grease, the Musical last year, will play the role of Plankton. He notes that there are two different casts, with about 30 members apiece.
“It’s a bubbly, energetic musical,” he says. “No dull moments!”
All three learners are thoroughly engaged with the performing arts at school, taking drama, and Isabel Hawes (year 12) and Emma Williams (year 10) are experienced dancers as well.
“We’re currently rehearsing twice a week,” says Isabel, “but it will ramp up. In the two weeks leading up to the show, we’ll have rehearsal every single day.”
Isabel starred opposite Neo last year as Sandy in Grease, and she has a soloist role as a sardine in SpongeBob. She has a raft of experience in Rolleston College, Kirwee Players, and CentreStage Rolleston shows, as well as being part of the Rolleston College dance academy and Showquest team.
Neo and Isabel say that Rolleston College supports their performance goals by offering plenty of opportunities for them to shine, in the productions, in classes, and in theatresports and more. They both auditioned for roles in this year’s production, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, for which they expect to be adding three rehearsals each week to their already packed schedules.
Emma, who is also in our Rolleston College dance academy, relishes the opportunity to meet new people and gain industry qualifications and experience through dance and performance. She also treasures her friends made through performing arts, and likes learning new things. With a host of other performing accolades under her belt, including Frozen Jr and Newsies Jr, Emma is part of the ensemble in the musical.
“Rolleston College supports us with dance classes and workshops,” she says.
We are super proud of these learners and their achievements in the performing arts!
