Across our two campuses, there are risks and dangers that all learners should take note of, and report to teachers if they see anything out of order. We urge learners to take care and be respectful on their way to and from school.
Bicycles and scooters
All cyclists and e-scooter users must wear a helmet in accordance with New Zealand law.
We highly recommend that all learners who use scooters to travel to and from school wear a helmet.
Bikes and scooters must be locked during the school day, in the shed, or in the racks. Learners must take care to lock their bike in a location that does not block entrances or ramps. Please be considerate of your fellow ākonga.
We have a wheels up for the day policy – this means learners must not use their bikes, scooters, or skateboards during school hours. This is for your safety.
Primary schools
Learners should not visit their former primary schools unless they are invited or have an appointment.
On Wednesdays, learners must not enter other school grounds before 3pm on their way home from school. Please respect other schools.
Signing in and out of school
All learners who are leaving school early or arriving late need to sign in or out at student services. This is important for our health and safety procedures – we need to know who is on campus at all times. Please remind your learner to sign in and out!
Road safety
Everyone, whether you're walking, cycling, on a scooter or in a car or vehicle, needs to take care to observe road rules and speed limits.
The speed limit around Rolleston College and Clearview Primary School has been reduced to 30km/h from 8:30am to 9am and 2:45pm to 3:15pm. The council is aware that we finish earlier on Wednesdays and are working on a solution for signage to reflect this.
To inform drivers of the speed reduction, electronic flashing signs are in place on:
There are also permanent static signs advising the timings of the 30km/h speed reduction on Broadlands Drive (east of the roundabout).
When passing a school bus with children present, the speed limit is 20km/h in both directions of where the bus is stopped. Check your speed when entering a school zone and check again while passing parked school buses.
When you’re approaching a school crossing, anticipate pedestrians from either side and drive with caution. There may be a school patrol manning the crossing to control the flow of pedestrians and vehicles. Parked cars near the crossing can block a driver’s view of children waiting to cross, so look for children’s shadows and move your car toward the centre of the lane if practical. Also keep an eye out for signs of activity within parked cars, as a door may open without warning.
Remind your learners to use pedestrian crossings, and stop and observe traffic before crossing.
If you’re dropping your own children off, ideally have them exit the car via the kerbside. If they do need to exit via the road side, show them how to do this safely using the ‘Dutch reach' of looking over their shoulder for bikes and vehicles passing before opening the car door. Alternatively, open the door for them and escort them safely to the footpath.
If your route to work unavoidably takes you through a school speed zone, please scan ahead, slow down and drive to the conditions. A safe speed may be below the posted limit.
Foster Park access
Learners who come to or from school via Foster Park should use the paths, and not cut through sport fields/pitches. Grounds staff have noticed tracks from bikes and scooters which require remedial work so the grounds can be used for sports again. Let's be respectful of our neighbours and use paths and walkways, avoiding the soft/wet grounds
Driving to school – for Te Kura Tuarua only
Before bringing a vehicle, parents must complete the vehicle permission form on SchoolBridge. Once at school, learners are expected to follow all license conditions – including the restricted licence rule of no passengers.
During school hours, our school site is a supervised environment. This means:
Learners are not permitted to leave the site or sit in their vehicles during break times.
Vehicles are off-limits during the day.
Parking: Our school car park is for staff and visitors. Learners should park on surrounding roads, ensuring they park legally. A friendly reminder to leave extra space on Fridays for local rubbish collection!
Drop off and pick up: If you drop or pick your child up from school, we encourage you to do so on Hungerford Drive. This will ensure learner safety and support traffic flow. Please avoid using Eileen Way to ease congestion.
Thank you for helping us keep our roads and our school gate safe for everyone.
