Principal's panui – 25 September 2026

Kia ora koutou,

As we come to the end of another busy term, this week has given us a wonderful reminder of just how much talent, energy and leadership exists within our kura.

A real highlight has been the announcement of our 2027 Student Leaders. Congratulations to all those who have been selected to leadership roles for next year. Leadership at Rolleston College is about much more than a title or a badge—it is about service, influence, contribution and helping others to succeed. I am looking forward to seeing this group step forward and make their mark across our college in 2027.

I also want to acknowledge all of the learners who put themselves forward. It takes courage to do so, and leadership certainly isn’t limited to those whose names appear on a list. There will be many opportunities next year for our rangatahi to lead through their actions, their character and the contribution they make to others.

This week has also provided plenty of opportunities to celebrate the spirit of our learners. Our X-Factor talent show final showcased an incredible range of talent, creativity and confidence. It takes courage to stand up in front of your peers and perform, and it was fantastic to see our learners supporting and celebrating one another.

Our whānau haka competition brought another kind of energy to the week—loud, proud and full of whānau spirit. Importantly, this kaupapa is also part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening te ao Māori across our kura. Haka provides our learners with an opportunity to engage with te reo Māori, tikanga, whakapapa and collective identity in a way that is visible, authentic and shared. It helps ensure that te ao Māori is not something reserved for particular occasions or particular groups of learners, but something that increasingly lives and breathes within the everyday culture of our college.

Seeing our rangatahi stand together, learn the kupu and actions, support one another and perform with such pride was powerful. It builds connection and belonging, while continuing our journey towards a kura where mātauranga Māori, tikanga Māori and te reo Māori have a natural and valued place.

Together, these moments capture something pretty special about Rolleston College: young people prepared to lead, perform, participate, take risks and stand proudly together.

As we head into the holidays, I want to thank our learners, kaimahi and whānau for everything you have contributed this term. It has been a full one, and I hope everyone has the opportunity over the next two weeks to slow down, reconnect with the people who matter, and enjoy a well-earned break.

To our learners—rest, recharge, have some fun and look after yourselves and each other. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for our final term of 2026.

Kia pai ngā hararei—have a safe and happy holiday break.

Ngā mihi nui,

Rachel Skelton
Tumuaki/Principal
